Managing Transitions: Effecting Positive Change in Your Life

The only constant in life is change. Although change is inevitable, our success in changing situations can only be determined by how we transition through these changes. The goal of this lesson is three-fold:

  • Increase Awareness of the Impact of Change
  • Identify the Transitions You Must Go Through to Manage Change
  • Learn How to Help Yourself and Others Through Change

Society consists of many diverse people. Because we don’t understand a culture different from ours, we often pre-judge those who are not like us. Our attitude must be "dare to understand before wanting to be understood." In this lesson, several areas will be addressed:

  • Stages of Intercultural Sensitivity
  • Comparing Cultural Patterns
  • Comparing Cultural Communication Styles and Values
  • Myths that Prevent Collaborations Between Cultures

Conflict will always be a part of our lives. More often than not, conflicts arise through misunderstanding and miscommunication. Culture and value systems influence our perceptions of various issues. Conflict is not good or bad but how we manage the conflict determines negative or positive outcome. In this lesson, students will learn the following:

  • Principles of Active Listening
  • Win/Win Attitude in Conflict
  • Evaluation of Situations Which Cause Conflict
  • Character and Conflict Styles

We have control over the decisions we make but not necessarily the consequences of those decisions. Many of our decisions are made as we operate in a reactive mode versus a proactive mode of thinking. Using the model of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, the following areas will be addressed:

  • Be Proactive
  • Begin with the End in Mind
  • Put First Things First
  • Sharpen the Saw
  • Think Win-Win
  • Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
  • Synergize
  •

A famous proverb states, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." Self-worth is determined by self-perception. This self-perception is often developed based on current environments and not future potential. In this lesson, the following topics will be discussed:

  • Wings of an Eagle: Rising Above Life’s Circumstances
  • Losing to Win: Developing Healthy Relationships
  • Time: Your Greatest Asset
  • Beauty Within and Without
